Searching for the golden balance between automation, nature, and tradition 23-27 March 2026
Results of a street survey and our own reflections conducted under the project “Searching for the golden balance between automation, tradition, and nature”.
What I can see and hear:
We can see colourful historic buildings, narrow streets, and traditional architecture.
We hear people talking, footsteps on the cobblestones, street musicians, and sometimes the sound of traffic in the distance.
How do I feel here?
I feel calm. The atmosphere is pleasant, although there are many tourists which makes it a bit busy.
Do you think the balance between nature and technology is maintained?
Yes, to some extent. The Old Town preserves historical buildings and open public spaces, but modern technology is still present in a subtle way that does not dominate the environment.
Do you think there is a balance between nature and human intervention?
The balance is fairly good because the area protects historical tradition while still allowing modern life to function.
Price is the most important because people often have a limited budget.
Price is the most important because I often buy many products at once. Even a small price difference makes a big difference in total.
Tradition is important because local products are fresher and of better quality.
One Lady told us that price is very important for her, she tries to save up unless she is buying for a special occasion.
Another Lady told us that her family likes traditional polish ingredients in their food so she pays the most attention to that.
The balance between nature and technology isn’t fully maintained – tech often degrades the environment. For example, we saw trees near roads and cars.
We feel admiration for nature and concern over tech’s harm.
No, balance isn’t maintained – cities consume resources faster than nature regenerates.
Yes, but fragile – human biotech aids nature, yet risks biodiversity loss.
Convenience – comes with money, people pay a lot for convenience
Convenience – better comfort, not everyone can afford convenience
Tradition – strengthens culture and cultivates bonds
We feel good, introspective, peaceful and calm
Yes, in Warsaw we believe the balance is maintained
Sometimes, there can be balance between nature and human intervention although it is fragile
To sum up, balance is maintained and exists even though it’s fragile
“I feel relaxed and in balance.
Yes, I think the balance is perfectly maintained. While I walked through the streets of the Old Town, I felt a strong combination of peaceful nature and futuristic architecture.
Yes, humanity hasn’t intervened as much as it could have.”
(Milk bar staff member)
According to a staff member from a milk bar, the most important thing is the balance between price, tradition, and convenience. There is no single factor that is more important than the others.
(Person 2)
In the Old Town, tradition is the most important. It is a piece of Polish history. Price and convenience are of secondary importance.
(Person 3)
Convenience and the lack of large crowds are very important. There are not as many crowds here as in other European cities. You can easily walk everywhere or quickly get around by metro.
